Miso Braised Mooli Radish

Heard of mooli radish? It's a mild-flavoured winter radish with a sweet and lightly spicy flavour. It's also a really good immune system booster and is packed with antioxidants, as well as being high in fibre, vitamin C and potassium. If you haven’t cooked with mooli radish before, this easy recipe is a great place to start. It's one of the simplest ways to cook it. Delicious, sweet, meaty and juicy, you can serve it with rice or any side you like.

Substitutes:

  • No soy sauce? Swap for tamari . 
  • No ginger? Use ginger paste. 
  • No caster sugar? Use honey or maple syrup instead. 
  • No sesame oil? Olive oil or vegetable oil will work.

Ingredients:

1 Mooli radish

2 tbsp Sesame oil

1 tbsp Ginger (grated )

1 tbsp Miso paste

2 tbsp Soy sauce

1 tbsp Rice wine vinegar

1 tbsp Mirin

1 tsp Caster sugar

For serving (optional):

Spring onions (sliced )

Sesame seeds

Rice (cooked )

sriracha (for dipping)

Recipe:

  1. Scrub the mooli radish clean, then cut it into 4cm thick discs.
  2. Heat the sesame oil in a frying pan over a medium heat, then add the mooli slices and cook for 5 minutes, until lightly golden.
  3. Add 350ml water, the ginger, miso paste, soy sauce, rice wine vinegar, mirin and sugar. Mix until combined, put the lid on and simmer for 30 minutes, or until the mooli radish is fork-tender.
  4. Serve with the broth, the side of your choice and sliced spring onions on the top.

How to store

Store in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days, or in the freezer for up to 1 month.
