Meet Our Salad Grower

We took a trip out to the fields to visit our longtime growers at LJ Betts. Watch the video to see the hard work and dedication behind your weekly salad bags in your Oddbox.

As you (hopefully) know, at Oddbox, we really care about our growers. After all, without them, there’d be very little (read: nothing) to put in our boxes. We give growers a reliable place where they can sell their fruit and veg, if they end up with too much or if supermarkets pull out of a deal. We give them a fair price and in return, they give us delicious fruit and veg. A good deal, if you ask us.

So, in an effort to learn as much as we can and meet our network of growers, some of the Oddbox team went to visit our longtime salad growers, LJ Betts. We spent the day with Nick Ottewell, the farming and commercial director, learning just how much care and effort goes into growing their crops. If you want to learn more, click the video below.

Nick taught us about pests: wriggly caterpillars and hopping rabbits who nibble at stems and chew through leaves. We learned about how meticulously watering is planned, having to meet strict rules (mostly to make sure people aren’t using too much). There’s a lot more that goes into growing salad than just those two points, but for all you visual learners, we filmed a video at the farm on that very sunny day.

We hope this gives you a peek behind the curtain to the sorts of people we work with and all the good we can do together, in the name of low waste. Huge thank you to Nick and the LJ Betts team for showing us around Church Farm and being so patient while we asked a million questions.
